We supply oak, which is a natural product subject to its environment and its own ageing process. Oak may bend, twist, split and change colour depending on its age and according to changes in temperature and to levels of moisture and light in its atmosphere. No movement, however old the oak, cannot be guaranteed. Reclaimed oak is the most stable because of its age (between 50 and 200 years).
Air-dried oak is less prone to movement, splitting and twisting and its relative stability comes from being dried in the open air for at least 3 years so that it has lost its green ‘’tension’’. Most dimensions are available in air dried oak, either from stock or after cutting.
Green oak is newly sawn and is generally about one year old. It has the highest moisture content and is the easiest oak to cut and work. As it has had little drying time, green oak is prone to movement, which may have structural implications.
